Engine Cooling problem
1994 Honda Civic 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello,

While driving to work I noticed tempature gauge was over the red line. (Driving on freeway doing about 70 for about 10minutes) Immediatly hit the hazard lights and pulled to emergency lane. Steam came from under hood. Popped hood and noticed the radiator cap was missing. Before leaving to work I had added fluids. Not sure if I didnt put it on correctly or just left it off all together. Made it off freeway (highway patrol pushed me in neutruel) Left car in Mcdonalds parking lot and made it to work. Got back to car. Added more fluids. Also noticed that oil was gone. Added 3 quarts of oil. Let car run for about 10 minutes. Drove it around parking lot another 5 to see if the temp would shoot up. NOTHING. But as soon as I hit the freeway of course the temp shoots up. Turn the heater on. Hot air comes out temp gague goes down. Tunr it off and temp goes up. If I went over 40mph temp went up. Made it back to the house after taking the streets. What should I do next? Anyway to check things by myself before taking it to a shop? Or is it a must to take it to a shop? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

You may have a partially stuck thermostat or possibly a blown head gasket. I woul dhave a shop look at it and chemical test the cooling system for exhaust agses (blown head gasket)
