My 1994 honda civic EX 5-speed has been having some clutch issues recently. Its been making a rattling sound when I engage the clutch pedal that goes away when in gear and the clutch pedal has been released. I've had to be very careful when releasing the pedal too because if its at the wrong RPM or its released too fast, the clutch slams into gear very hard.

Tonight I was headed home from work and I went to downshift for a corner and when I started to release the clutch pedal it slammed into gear and jolted the car very hard. The pedal immediately became stiff and there was noticeable feedback that I could feel through the pedal.

Now the car will not go into gear at all and when I engage the clutch pedal I have to push a lot farther before there is resistance and once fully engaged it makes a strange noise. Sort of an intermittent rubbing sound that repeats with every rotation of the crankshaft.

Can you give me any ideas on what could be the source of the problem? I recently changed the transmission fluid and that did not help, so it seems the problem is isolated to the clutch or one of its components. I really appreciate your help, thank you!

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

This sounds as if the clutch pressure plate and the thrust bearing are or have failed, I would be removing the transmission and replacing the clutch assembly including the thrust, don't forget to have the flywheel machined or you will have clutch shudder problems.
