What is an axle shaft? What happens when you hear a grinding sound when you turn the steering wheel and what will happen if the axle shaft needs to be replaced and it isn't?

An axle shaft transmits rotational power from the transmission to the wheels. If an axle shaft needs to be replaced and isn't, the shaft could snap, leaving the vehicle un-driveable.
