Brakes problem
1992 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 200K miles
I tried to replace the rotors and pads on my kids Civic VX today. The inside of the right rotor is trashed.
The inside pads was worn to the backing plate. Outside not bad at all. I noticed it was really hard to raise the caliper after removing the bottom bolt.
Got new rotors and pads at NAPA. The new pads and rotor were too big to allow the caliper to fit over them. After some thinking I decided to leave one of the old pads in as it had lots of meat left.
Drivers side. I installed only the new pads. The rotor was probably marginally worn but smooth and I did not want to hassle with same the "too big" problem. I am assuming these cheap Chinese pads are not that accurate. Anyway, I put the pads in and when i test drove the car down the driveway there was a horrible grinding noise. The caliper was rubbing the inside of the wheel. There was a shallow groove worn in the wheel and a shiny edge on the cailper!
If I can find the outside original worn pad (still OK) I am tempted to put it back in. I tossed it at the NAPA dealer.
Can I file off a couple mm from the edge of the caliper. It is pretty hefty.
Have you seen this before? I haven't in 40 years of working on my own cars.
Many thanks for your help!
