The engine to my 1988 Honda Civic DX tends to run hot if I've been stuck in traffic for a while on the freeway. This usually occurs only when I am in 1st or 2nd gear. After I speed back up, the engine cools down again. The mechanic who did my smog check said it might be the thermostat. Does this sound like a correct diagnosis and what would the average cost be for such a repair?

Best place to start is the thermostat and the coolant level then go from there
