Here is the scenario:
Bought the car used, drove it for about a month. Heater hose broke but it was driven for about another mile before it shut itself off. Hasn't started since. Blowing water out of #3 & 4.
I diagnosed it as a blown head gasket. Pulled the cylinder head, picture attached.

Confirm the following:
1) the head is unusable, true?[img:482d9e1592]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/199295_headblock_1.jpg[/img:482d9e1592].
2) I can buy a rebuilt head for how much?
3) not sure I trust the mileage, so is it worth it to put more money into it or scrap the whole car?
4) Where did the water enter? the gasket was intack.
5) On the head, what is the hole next to the exhaust valve for? As you can see, #3 & 4 (left) the hole is corroded.

Thanks in advance.[img:482d9e1592]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/199295_34_1.jpg[/img:482d9e1592]

Hi todduh,

1. Definitely this head is scrap material.

2. and 3 Sorry I am unable to quote you the price or viability.

4. The head chould be cracked internally allowing water to enter the combustion chamber.

5. Are there any additional valves ( 4 smaller ones) ?
If there are, it is for the CVCC valves. Thought they scrapped it for 86 models onwards?

Thanks for the response.

I am wondering if anyone has had experience purchasing refurbished heads like this and wonder what prices you found. Not really wanting an official quote just a ball-park figure.

Since posting this I noticed that there is a valve above the small hole so they must be the CVCC valves. Not sure if this is the original engine. I guess I can check the engine number?
