Help Sounds Like a 2 stroke Diesel 2002 Accord EX 98,000 mi

Are you talking about sounding like a 2 cylinder diesel with the pop pop pop?

Does it idle fine? What stops after it is warmed up, the engine itself or the missing and noise?

Yes the pop pop pop sound, kind of fast and the car does idle fine. the car warms up and the noise subsides. If you drive the car before it's fully warmed up, the noise gets louder and faster based on the RPMs. The car runs well once it's warmed up (except for the reving of the transmission shifting)into second gear

I think we have two issues but they may become one as we sort things out.

The pop, when that occurs is the engine running smooth but higher in idle? The idle speed is always faster when the engine is cold. During the pop pop is it a rougher feeling idle?

The engine runs fine at all other times but just when it should be shifting in to second gear the engine feels like it revs up, but once it shifts things are fine? Right? Does it feel like the tranny is having difficulty getting the second gear to take hold? Have you checked tranny fluid? When was the tranny fluid last changed and the filter in the tranny?

* Yes, when the car is first started. the RPMs are about 1100-1400. The car warms up and settles into about 900 - 1000 rpms and the sound stops. The idle doesn't feel rough until it settles into the 900 -1000 range.. but not too rough, someone wouldn't notice it if they were not looking for it.

As for the tranny:

* The car runs fine except certain times when the automatic trans shifts into 2nd, most noticeably when slowing to turn or for a red light that turns green, then accelerate and it pauses, revs and then catches. (it does not make a any noise, no grinding, no bang just the hesitiation and rev) once it catches everything is fine and smooth. No difficulty getting second gear to hold once it gets past the engine rev it's a smooth ride and transfer into 3rd.

I am taking it for an oil change on Sat AM so I will have the Tranny fluid checked. All should have been doen with the timing belt repair this summer (both Fluid and Filter) again I will have them checked Sat am.

I also plan to have the brakepads replaced and possibly new struts.

I was referring to the tranny fluid change and the filter in the tranny.

Is the car especially quiet when running? I am pointing to a possible exhaust leak. The pop might be a crack in the exhaust manifold. Take a look at the manifold. Pull of the cover and visually inspect the exhaust manifold and the gasket that joins the exhaust pipe to the manifold.

Hi Bruce, yes. I understand you were refering to the Tranny fluid and filter, I am taking it in for an oil change on Sat, so I will check it then.

And thanks I'll check the manifold. It's not any more quiet than before the 2-stroke disel sound is kind of loud then quites down. thanks for the help
