2005 Honda Accord Hard Start

Looking for suggestions on my 05 Accord. Bought it 6mo ago, turns over slow, like a car with a low battery. Engine light came on which led to new battery and thermostat. Light came on again and then Honda dealership changed a sensor that told engine how gas to fire/outside temp I was told. Also said they ran a charge test(?) on the starting system which was normal. Engine light has not come back on but still starts sluggishly. Honda dealer then tells me that some Hondas just crank a little. My concern is that I live in upstate NY and with cold mornings I had to crank for 4-5 minutes the other day before car started. Any advice on what problem might be? Thanks Much

Hello –

Well, just a couple of questions to better understand

When the engine light came on you said that led to a new battery and thermostat…..why? Did you check the codes and that is what was suggested?

Can you check your receipt and see what sensor was changed….even a part number would be great.

I understand when you say it cranks slow like a low battery……and it still does that…..yes?

Now when you say you crank for 4-5 minutes….that means you turn the key and the engine turns like a low battery and it never starts……the engine just turns slow and then eventually it starts. Is this correct?

Okay, let’s do a couple of things….. please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or O’Reilly’s (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don’t get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery, alternator and I am pretty sure they can test your starter on the car. Now if they can’t test the starter on the car are you able to remove it and take it to them and let them test if for free?

Your starter may be dragging and pulling too many amps…..if the battery is new and strong it just sounds like that if the engine turns like a low battery.

Please do the above and get back with me on the answers and we will see what else we can do.
