I just had the 90,000 maintenace and front brakes done and asked the mechanics to pinpoint a rattling noise. They diagnosed the alternator, replaced that, and upon pickup it still was making the noise. They then diagnosed a belt tensioner. They ordered the part. When I brought it back in for that to be repalced, they subsequently said it was not that but the air conditioner compressor. Is that even possible to make a noise when the air isn't on. I don't feel they are misleading me, I've taken the car to them for years but the diagnosis seems a little odd as well as expensive.

Hi carson1550,

With a single serpentine belt, it sometimes is difficult to diagnose the source of the noise but if the mechanics are experienced, they should be able to do it.

Regardless of whether the compressor is running or not, it can emit noises if the pulley bearing is bad.
