Air Conditioning problem

The air conditioning in my car has suddenly stopped working. When I turn the car on the fan makes no noise and no air blows out. I turned the car off and back on again and the air came on. It proceeded to shut off withing 10 seconds. I've never serviced the air conditioner and really don't know much about cars. What could be the problem?
