Engine sputters and idles rough when in gear at a complete stop; after shifting to park the rough idle continues and the engine will stall altogether;the car is now difficult to start but when I am able to get the car in gear I am able to proceed. This problem is of two days duration beginning after a short (40 mile) drive up an easy grade mountain road. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would check the idle air control valve, and check mass airflow sensor/with airfilter and breather.

may want to check fuel pressure just to rule that out all together, but this and the other couple of things ive mentioned should clear your symptoms right up

Sounds like Mass Air Flow sensor to me.
That would be the first thing I would check.
