2002 Honda Accord Air Fuel Ratio Sensor

I have a 2002 Honda Accord 4cyl with 56,000 miles. The check engine light came on, and the mechanic told me it was that the air fuel ratio sensor (oxygen sensor) needed to be replaced. The sensor was replaced, but the light continues to come on. I took the car back, and the mechanic said the code is still indicating a problem with the air fuel ratio oxygen sensor. He said he would order another one, as the one he put in could be defective.

Furthermore, he said there is a possibility that there is no problem with the car, and that the computer that reads the data in the car and triggers the check engine light is not performing properly, and that possibly the main computer chip needs to be replaced.

Has anybody dealt with this problem before?

Which sensor was replaced? The upper or lower one? There can be other things that could be in play here as well. For instance, I am assuming it is the upper so the timing being off or a bad fuel injector could cause the O2 to kick out a reading. That should possibly kick out an other code but maybe not. Lower could be an indicator that the cat converter is not doing real well.
