2001 Honda Accord Brake light doesn't go off after starting

Hello,
My Honda Accord brake light on the dash goes on when I start the car in the morning and doesn't go off. It does not go on later if I drive the car. The front brake pads have been already replaced. Did check the fluid and it is at the correct level. Why is the brake light still on?

Hi robinsweeps. Welcome to the forum. Are you referring to the red brake light or the yellow anti-lock brake light? The red one is for the fluid level, which you checked, the parking brake which might be not fully released or the cable could be stretched allowing the handle to lift up a little, or the two hydraulic circuits aren't building the same pressure, typically from a leak but an internal leak in half of the master cylinder can cause that too.

One hint to tell if the parking brake is responsible is to watch the light very closely with the engine off and ignition switch on. If the light brightens just a very tiny amount when applying the parking brake, it is not the cause. Next unplug the electrical connector from the master cylinder. If the light goes off, the float with attached magnet may have sunk.
