while i was driving my speedometer stopped working and then my check engine light came on and since that happened after driving for a few miles the car idles high and while i am stopped the car seems as if it is going to cut off but it doesnt. If i turn the car off and start it up again it stops and seems to be fine. The car seems to be fine as long as i am in motion. how safe is it to drive the car.

It doesn't sound that safe.

Scan the PCM and retrieve the code. It's probably a VSS DTC (vehicle speed sensor)
