Engine was stalling and accelerating erratically. Car oxygen sensor was identified as problem and replaced. After a few days the problem reoccurred. We are now told the catalytic convertor is bad and needs to be replaced. I was told it is common for the both to go at the same time because if one is bad it will damage the other. Is this true?

Yes it is common for both to go at the sametime. Infact, everytime I personally replace the catalytic convertor I replace the oxygen sensor as well.
