Transmission problem
1997 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 147K miles

My car is getting long in the tooth. Problems started when the manual transmission would fall out of fifth gear. That still occurs, but now it has become increasingly difficult to shift into third gear. It will eventually go into third with a few tries, but sometimes there's grinding.

I would imagine it is only a matter of time before I get stranded. What exactly is occuring here, how much will it cost, to repair and is it even worth it for a car of this age (1997, 147K miles) Thanks!

There may be a couple things going on. The stickiness may be a build up of sludge regarding the hard to get in and out of gear. May be worn bushings. Need to look at.

The grinding may be internal bearings that are bad. Again it needs to be looked at.

As far is "is it worth it?"

Without seeing the car, the mileage is low for a honda. These babies go the distance.

With fuel mileage becoming a big concern, I'm sure you can attest to the decent results this should have.

Say you put $1000 into it. That is about 3 payments? Not bad for a paid for car.

Hi pjbap,

I believe the lock nut for holding the 5th gear is loose.

Remove the trans rear housing and replace/retighten the locknut and all should be well. Make sure the bearings and gears are seated well before tightening the locknut.
