The car's AC is initally ice cold for at least 20 minutes. Then, it slowly fades to outside air temperature (the fan blows normal speed). Shut off everything, or just the compressor button for 5 or more minutes, then it's immediately ice cold again when the compressor is turned back on. I was wondering if the expansion valve or thermostadt might be failing ? Could the evaporator be "freezing up" ? A lot of water drips out as soon as parked. I am experienced enough to replace any parts (I have even rebuilt an automatic transmission) but I know better than to try to evacuate and recharge the R134 system.

Hi jimf1673,

Thermostat or evaporator are both possibilities. Does the compressor work through all these?

It could be the ECM as well as the AC clutch relay is connected to it.

Try bypassing the thermostat when the problem occurs to determine if it is at fault. .
