Hi japaknee. Welcome to the forum. When the Check Engine light turns on it means the Engine Computer has detected a problem that can have an adverse affect on tail pipe emissions, and has memorized a diagnostic fault code. Your mechanic will connect a hand-held computer called a scanner to read the code(s) which will lead him to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the specific part. Many auto parts stores can read the codes for you too but that's all. The mechanic's equipment is much more expensive and will also display live sensor values and other data, and can command the car's various computers to perform their operations.

As for your window, if it goes in either direction, the motor is ok. If it tries to go the other way but can't, suspect a frayed cable or cracked plastic pulley. The hints it's trying to work are a grinding or thumping sound inside the door, or the dome light dims slightly when you push the window switch. If there is no indication the window is trying to work, the switch could have one bad contact out of its four. On newer model cars, the engineers have added a relatively unreliable Body Computer to the circuit. Some cars also use relays that can develop bad contacts.
