Engine Cooling problem
1996 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 187xxx miles

My car is overheating and I am trying to diagnose the problem. Here are the facts, the car overheats after only driving a short distance. When driving on the freeway, the temperature may drop temporarily. Upon stopping, the radiator fan comes on immediately. There is coolant in the system. The in-dash temperature gauge seems pretty sporadic in moving up and down.

My proposed steps:

1. Flush coolant and refill radiator
2. Replace thermostat
3. Replace water pump

Is there a way to test these components for functionality before replacing them? Could it be something else? Are there any other steps I should take to diagnose the problem?

Hi pberardi,

Thermostats are tested by suspending it in a beaker of water while boiling it over a flame.

To test water pump, run engine till it warms up with radiator cap opened and then watch coolant flow from radiator neck when revving engine slightly. Flow should be quite fast when thermostat is open.

Did you check the coolant level in the radiator? Do you need to top up coolant frequently?
