Steering problem
1996 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 222589 miles

My steering wheel is very loose, when I turn left or right the steering wheel goes almost all the way around. When driving straight I can shift the steering wheel slightly left or right. About two weeks now when ever I parallel park the steering makes awful sounds. What is wrong and what can I do to fix it. Help please!

More than likely this is a steering gear (rack) issue.

Basically, the pump is responsible for supplying the pressure to turn the wheel easier but if they are not turning properly then that is the rack.

So, this means we need to make sure the fluid is full and if it is then I would replace the rack.

Please run through this info and let me know what questions you have on this but if it were me, I would replace the steering rack.

If the fluid is low, then the noise you are hearing is the pump trying to pressurize air and it makes a loud noise when it is doing this.

Let me know if you have questions and we can go from there, but I suspect you are going to have to replace the rack and pinion gear.

Thanks

Check image #5, second from last in the previous answer, reference the stiffener plate, which is connected to the subframe of the car by two short bolts. The steering pinion rack is in turn mounted to the stiffener plate with two more, longer bolts. On my car, those two longer bolts, hanging upside down under the car, fell out of the car, after which the steering wheel travel became very sloppy, like driving on ice, and the wheel would travel almost a full rotation in the middle of normal steering wheel travel before affecting either direction of steering. Re-attach the rack with replacement bolts ($34.00 for the two, 5 days to acquire through Honda.) Be prepared to muscle the rack back into position, wheels suspended off the ground, to get the rack mounting holes to re-align with the frame.

Wow. If those bolts, fell out then more than likely someone had removed them at some point and didn't torque them properly. However, if that was loose then that would explain everything in the steering as you are describing.

Were you able to get it back together and is it working properly now?

Yes, the problem is resolved. I only wish that I had known enough to get out of the car and look for a bolt. There was a distinct moment when I was driving through a parking lot when it was like having driven on to a sheet of ice, with very loose, sloppy steering. But alas, I had no idea what was going on. I had enough steering to carefully maneuver the car home and started my research on how to fix the problem. It Was amazing to me how little help the internet was. My final clue was at the local library in All Data DB, the diagram that I referenced in the answer and was among those that you provided.

Thank you.
