I have a 93 Honda Accord and I need to replace the water pump. I was wondering if it was possible if I could do this myself. I have a small understanding of cars but I replaced my alternator with no problems. I would rather do it myself but if necessary I will take it to a mechanic. So tell me what to do!!

Replacing a water pump is absolutely within the realm of DIY'ers - it all depends on if you have the right tools, a good understanding of what needs to be done, A REPUTABLE REPAIR MANUAL, and u don't mind scraping a couple of knuckles heh, heh.

On a '93, I can't recall if the pump is external to the engine or internal. If external, it would be somewhat similar to replacing the alternator w/ the exception of needing to drain coolant first. It would be held on by a bracket and turned by a belt. Drain coolant, remove belt, disconnect hoses, remove pump. Install is reverse.

If the pump is internal, (which I think it is) it becomes more complex because the pump is driven by the timing belt. Not that it is impossible, but you would have to take off the timing belt which means you have to make sure the timing is spot on when you put the belt back on. If you are going to go this route, you should plan on replacing the belt also since it is a chore getting down to this level and you wouldn't want to replace the pump and then 2 months later have to go back in and do the belt. Good luck!
