Transmission problem
1993 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I think the parking pawl has gone bad? When I put the car in park the car rolls and will not stop. I took the cover off the trans were the shifter cable is and pushed it all the way in park and still you can roll the tires. Would the parking pawl be bad and how big of a job to put a new one in. Thanks

Hi greeniebfd,

The parking pawl assy is located at the rear end of the trans.

You need to remove the end cover to get at it.

Most probably the trans has been running with a whining noise for quite some time prior to the parking pawl giving way.

Usually this happens when the gear lock nut comes loose due to improper torque during assembly.

You might need to replace the gears assy and if you a re lucky, just retightening the nut will do.

Check for wear on the cover, any leakage would cause gear shifting problem.

Hi
Thanks for the info. I am not sure about the wining sound we just got the car and have been fixing it up. It would go in park sometimes but now not at all. At first I thought the cable needed adjusted. It had been shifting hard from rev to park but then realized that the shifting cable is bad and have a new one coming. So when I took off the cover on the Trans were the cable goes. I could push the arm all the way in park and still nothing was engaging. Do you have to pull the whole transmission out or can you take this cover off and work on it... Thanks

Hi greeniebfd,

You can work the cover off without taking the whole trans out.

Need to remove right driveshaft, castor bar, front engne mount and trans end mount to lower it so cover can come off.
