My 91 Accord has a problem surging. I had traced it to a fauty Idle Air Control Valave and replaced it with a $20 used one. At the dealer its over $220! It worked fine for about a year or so. Recently I went to a junk yard and yanked another used one for $25. It worked for 1 week. Is there a way to bypass the function of this part or do I have to splurge for a new part. The car has over 225,000 miles and it pains me to spend that much on a part. My 16yr old doesn't really mind the surging, but I', m sure its not good on the engine.

Is there a way to clean the IAC? I assume that it is carbon build up that makes it faulty, am I correct? And is the only solution going to be replacing it everytime it goes bad?

Onlt about 1/4 of the time, usually it's the little motor drive that does not respond quickly enough! If you want to clean it it's usually bolted to the side of the throttle body, be careful removing it so you don't tear the gasket. Use carb spray to clean just the IAC, not the throttle bore, some makers use teflon to coat thier throttles! Carb spray will destroy it!
