Electrical problem

when you go to turn the ignition on the motor runs and when you release the key the engine just stops and tyhe cat wont go. When the car stops a hissing noise comes from the engine which to me sounds like there is a hole in oone of the engine parts. When we towed it back from town, we left the engine on and it still wouldnt go, would only go if ignition stays on.
