I was driving from Las Vegas to Reno and I noticed my headlights started to dim once in and while. I just thought it was he drain from my heater just as it dims while using the AC. Then the battery light came on but I was in the middle of the desert so I pushed on until I reached Reno. I drove down the street and the car died. I am assuming that is the alternator and not the battery. What should I check before I take it off and down to the parts store?
What is the output of the alternator if I can get it started again?
Can it be something else besides the alternator?
Is there any tricks in getting the alternator out of its location?
Is there anything else I should be checking?

Your alternator is bad, a good alternator output is about 14.5 volts at idle speed.
