why does my car stops when im driving but i can drive when i stop in bk crack up

Ok while driving down the road everything will be fine but all of a sudden my car would just shut off so I pull on side of the road in crank It back up in go what cud it be I need a tune up are what because lately ma car was drinking gas faster n I smell gas fumes a little?
