1990 Honda Accord engine over heating

In cold weather the temperature gauge goes all the way to hot. If you put the interior heat on high and either race the engine ( when sitting still ) or drive the needle tends to drop into the normal zone.
The odd thing about this is that the same thing occured last winter but in the summer months the needle is always in the normal operating zone, without having to use the heat and blowermotor etc.

Check your coolant level and the freezing point of the coolant. This is a simple and easy test but freezing of the coolant can cause this problem.

I have the exact same problem even though I topped off coolant using prestone (not the 50/50) but did blend 50% coolant and water. Also had just replaced thermostat & no leaks.
