I drove 30 miles with no difficulty to a windshiled repair shop. Returned and picked up car, 4 blocks away I find my treansmission slipping in forth gear, shifted to 3rd and it ran fin, at higher rpm obviously. Since I drive this car 100 plus miles a day, it is touch to deal with the suddened problem.

Is there anything peculiar aboit this car thqat other than agem would csuse the suddeen failure of forth gear, and complete loss of reverse on this car. I had no problems with this car until now. Any ideas?

After changing out tranny fluid, and problem persisting tonight, I figure I will need major tranny work. You help is very much appreciated.

Hi Bob,

The 4th clutch has failed resulting in the loss of reverse and slipping in 4th. You need to rebuild or replace the trans.

Is a replacement of 4th clutch and reverse adequate to get the job done. Is a price of $1000 for parts and labor fair?

thanks,

Bob

Since the trans is rather aged, you should also replace the O rings (seals) internally if you wish to be trouble free for the next few years.

$1000 would be a good price to get the job done. You got a quote for this price?

But i do not believe it is worth much more than that to do the job. The car is nearly 20years old. And if it does cost much more to fix I may be ahead to junk it and find something else. Everything else works pretty good, and it is fully loaded. Just do not know.

Trans repairs would normally cost from $1600 upwards.
The repair time is quoted at 13.8 hours and parts can easily cost a few hundreds.
