1987 Honda Accord reverse does not engage sometimes

Hi, sometimes when I shift the car into reverse it doesn't engage. I have to put it back in park a couple of times and try again until it engages. What could be the problem?

Hi kmacaroni,

This is an early symptom of a failing transmission. If problem occurs mainly when starting from cold and usually does not occur after warming up coupled with some slippage when up shifting into 4th speed, that would confirm it.

Reverse and 4th speed sharses the same clutch so if reverse does not work correctly with slipping in 4th speed engagement, the 4th clutch is faulty and trans is due for rebuilding or replacement.
