hole under engine

2003 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA
170,000 MILES • 1.8L • V6 • 2WD • AUTOMATIC

car has been leaking coolant and oil couldnt find the problem but i did find a big hole under the engine block that i know shouldnt be there anybody can tell me what goes there?
