My son has the car listed above it has a 3.4(oddball) V-6. Sometimes the rpm's race way up, drops to normal, or below normal then stalls. What could cause this? I have sprayed cleaner on the mass air flow sensor. The thermostat has been changed. Today it raced up to 4000 rpm's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe take the IAC off and clean it and the hole it came out of with a spray can of 'throttle body cleaner'. See my link:

you can also clean the throttle body's butterfly on both sides.

Many times a vacuum leak (loose/cracked hose/or plastic related components) will cause the elevated rpm. You may hear it hissing. I would look for those first, before cleaning the parts.
