Shifter not working properly

The shifter only goes straight and back and it has no catch to it at all. what could cause this?

Hi,

The first thing I would check is the linkage at the transmission to see if things are still attached.

I attached a few pics below. Check these areas for damage, something disconnected, or a broken cable. When checking at the transmission, have a helper shift through the gears to see what is happening.

Pic 1 below is for a 5-speed transmission. Pic 2 is for a 6-speed transmission.
