Car chugging during idling and there is a prominent gas smell.

You have a carburetor.

Your car is probably running real rich.

Sounds like you may need a really good tune up to get it running smooth and efficiently again.

The fuel smell will then probably go away.

A tune-up on your vehicle should be really reasonable compared to taking one of these newer cars to get one.

On that 1975 you can almost crawl into the engine compartment and work on it!
