Heater outlet Pipe connector to engine

I did not realize this connector was a quick release lock type, and I guess I broke it when I removed it for a intake manifold gasket replacement. I am going to get a new one.
What the correct way to install the pipe to the connector? Install the connector to the engine, then insert the pipe in the connector, or put the heater pipe tube in the connector First. Thanks

Install the connector into the engine the install the pipe into the connector.
