The heater gauge does not increase while driving and the heater puts out low heat. If I idle for a few minutes the gauge increases and the heater output increases. When I drive again, the original conditions return. Can you offer a solution?

Replace the thermostat. This used to be a real common problem on every brand of vehicle, but today, with all the complicated and unreliable computer controls, those cause the majority of heater problems. The clue this is a simple, less expensive problem is your observation the temperature gauge is too low. Cannot get hot air if the engine coolant heating that air is not hot enough.
