Hello all,

Our heater blows hot for about fifteen to thirty seconds when first turned on and then goes lukewarm to cold. The heater works almost always when all controls are off with the temperature set to max hot with the outside air coming in (this is not a dual temperature control).

Recently, the heater worked great for a few minutes and then went cold again once I cycled it to cold and back to hot.

I topped off the coolant and checked for leaks. No issues.

I checked the heater core lines (the line on the left side (driver's) is hot to where you can't keep your hand on it due to the heat. The right side line is hot/warm (you can keep your hand on it without it burning).

I examined the blend door actuator right under the dash (easiest one to get to) and it is turning the plastic door shaft from hot to cold. It makes a very slight clicking noise or you can just hear it working? Is it possible for the door position sensor to be faulty even with the actuator turning the shaft?

Could my issue be from any other blend motors?

I am going to try replacing the cabin air filter, flushing the heater core, and burping the heater core as well.

I am not the best in automotive repair so please bare with me if I was confusing at all. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello again,

I have looked at the diagrams and so far they seem a little complicated for me to understand. I will work on it though for sure.

Just wanted to know if it is possible for the blend door actuator to be bad even if it's turning the blend door shaft? Would you recommend replacing it or should I skip or start with the diagnosis process?

I removed the actuator once, attempted to line all parts up with the lines, and when I put it back in the shaft would go in one direction then get stuck. I purchased a new actuator, took it apart, and placed all parts in the old actuator in the same position as the new one. After re-installing, the shaft spins in line with the cold and hot cycle as it did before. Still the same problem. Does this vehicle have a re-calibration procedure? I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery for ten minutes and then placed the key on the on position for two minutes as I saw this on a YouTube video. Just wondering if this vehicle requires this?

If we start out with heat and then as the day warms up try to move to cold air, the heat stays on and continues to blow through the vent even when it is off. We have to stop and turn the car off-sometimes several times to get the cold to work.

This sounds like the air temp actuator, but you should get it tested with a scanner, a "U" code should be stored in memory. This test will eliminate the guesswork, and in the long run save you some money!

Since your truck heat stays on but does not go back to cold till you shut it off it sounds like you have a vacum problem. On the air intake flapper is a vacum cylinder when you go to warm it draws a vacum and blows warm but when set to cold the vacum should release and the vent close. Check the vacum lines and to see if the flapper is closing.
As for the what are the symptoms your having with the system? S o I can research your problem.

This system does not use vacuum. It uses data and pcm and control module hooked to the actuator by a 5 wire connection.

If you mean it blows through the dash vents or defrost vents but does not change to the floor vents then you have either a mode door actuator or mode door failure.
Not a hard repair. Basically you put the passenger seat back, go into the passenger footwell. Remove the heat duct extension from the end of the HVAC case with a few screws. Right above it will be the mode control actuator. Remove the screws securing it, rotate it out so you can see the drive, now switch from defrost to vent to floor. If the actuator motor does not move, it is bad. If it does the door inside the case has failed. That is a bit harder to change.

Try pulling fuse for that HVAC unit for sixty seconds sometimes they reset without having to replace it.

The part number depends on which actual system you have. They all use the same HVAC plenum and parts, but the actuators depend on if you have manual, automatic or dual zone heat controls. There are three different parts to cover those options.

Fuse pull did not work. Pulled the lower actuator, this is the one that blends the hot and cold, it worked fine. Air Door Actuator that controls upper and lower air is Oreilly part number 604-114. Any idea of which one is the upper and lower control actuator location. Thanks

The mode door (defrost/vents/floor) is the one on the side of the HVAC plenum.
GM part #52473356

The blend door is the one at the bottom of the plenum (hot/cold) GM part #52474810

If your motor is running @ good temp, then it sounds like the heatercore. (Which is like a little radiator under your dash.) How is your fluid levels? If they are low, it maybe the nipples on your heatercore bad, which is where it leaks, do you smell antifreeze? If not loosing fluids then maybe blocked heatercore.

Hi, mostlikely you have a partially or fully stuck thermostat and it will need changing, worst case scenario, is a clogged heater core, also make sure your coolant is topped off
