Gear shift not showing correct gear

Gear shift does not show right gear for example. When it shows reverse it is actually in drive

Hi Sandra,

Sounds like the shift linkage just needs to be adjusted. Here is the procedure for adjusting it.

These types of indicators are just connected to the shifter by a cable and they get out of place as they age. It is not hurting anything but can be more annoying than anything.

This depends on which transmission the car has. If this is the four-speed, it will use the transmission range sensor and the computer to turn on the appropriate dash light. If that sensor has a defect, the transmission should be in limp mode, (stuck in second gear).

The older cars with the really tough three-speed transmission have an adjustment under the dash for the shift indicator.
