I just bought the vehicle listed above. The running lights and dashboard lights were not working so I checked the fuses and replaced one of them. The dashboard lights came back on but then the headlights stop working. So now I have no headlights or running lights. I was just wondering where the headlight relay fuse is I can't find it anywhere.

Hi,

First, pic 1 shows the in vehicle fuse box allocations. I highlighted ones specific to lighting that I feel are relevant. I need you to recheck fuse 5.

Next, pic 2 is a portion of the wiring schematic for the headlamps. Note that power is introduced via fuse 5 and is directed to the headlamp switch. You will see a spot where it says circuit breaker. That is an integral component in the switch and is not repairable without replacement of the switch itself.

Let me know if any if any exterior lighting is working as well as what you find with the fuse. In addition to checking the fuse, please confirm there is power to it.

Let me know.
Joe

Here is a picture of my fuse box. The only one I can find I replaced the number 5 fuse the first time when my tail lights weren't working but my headlights work also my none of my dashboard lights worked. The number 5 20 amp fuse was blown I replaced i. After I replaced it the headlights quit along with my taillights not coming on, although my brake lights, hazard lights, heater blower, turn signals, radio, windshield wipers, continued to work and also my instrument panel lights came and door buzzer. After receiving your email I rechecked all the fuses pulled the fuse box down and I am not getting power 2 half of my fuses. I pulled fuses 4 through 8 and my instrument panel still worked. I put all the fuses back in and now my door buzzer doesn't work my radio stop working my taillights and headlights still do not work.

Also, the guy about the truck from has had the truck parked since 2017 and still has the same odometer reading since 1999. He said he bought it for his son to fix it up but never got around to it. Now his son has moved away graduated college and father is now in his 70's can't do any work to it that's why he sold it to me.

Hi Mark,

I love the old square body Dakota. I owned about 5 of them over the years. Now I have the new body style, and they are not the same trucks.

Anyway, I have no idea what the person before you has done, but something seems off.

If you look at the first two pictures below, they show the power distribution. The remaining one are of the fuse box. See if anything there makes sense to what you experience.

Next, the last picture below is of the headlamp switch. Check to see if there is power to the wire I indicated.

Let me know.
