Headlamp adjustment

Once the headlamps are installed, how do I adjust headlamp up or down?

If you replaced then with the OEM number and type bulbs they should not need to be adjusted. If they have to be adjusted the process is covered in the rear of the owners manual. You need a flat level area that you can lay out a line to adjust the low beam cut off. The page below outlines the procedure.

What is the mechanism on or around the headlamp construction used to actually adjust the headlamp?

It is inside the factory headlamp unit. There is a screw that moves a threaded adjuster which moves the bulb carrier and reflector. This system is designed to operate only with the OEM type bulb. So if it came with halogen bulbs and you install an LED bulb the adjuster is not going to do much because the light pattern is not correct for the reflector.
