More precisely, how do I know if I can simply replace the valve cover or do I need to replace the whole head gasket? Please help.

Good morning,
Head gasket failure is a result of the engine overheating. Once the temperature reaches a certain point, the gasket fails and allows combustion gases into the cooling system.
