I received new head bolts, but they have grease on them. Are they okay to install in my cylinder heads and torque them? Or do I need to hit them with brake clean and then apply some engine oil to the threads?

Hi,

If they are new, chances are that is something the manufacturer used to lubricate the bolts and to help prevent corrosion from starting prior to use.

If you can, upload a picture of what they look like so I can see. However, I suspect they will be fine the way they are.

Let me know.

Hi,

I believe that is a rust inhibitor. Certainly, you can clean them off and re-lubricate them with a thin coat or oil. That would be fine.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

I'm not sure which engine you have. However, I attached the tightening sequence and torque specs (which are much lower than I expected) for the 4.0L V6.

If you have a different size engine, let me know.

Take care,

joe

Hi,

Yep, that makes a difference. I now know where you got the 30ft/lbs. LOL

I attached the directions below along with the torque sequence.

Let me know if this helps or if you need any other info.

Take care,

Joe

Awesome. That's perfect. I'm also trying to find out the size of these exhaust manifold studs. I need new ones.

Hi,

I'm sorry, but that isn't something the manual provides. Are you able to remove any of them? That's what I would do. Remove one and then you can determine the size by trying a few different ones.

Let me know.

I extracted them. I know they are not a M12. American muscle sold me bbk header kit. I don't have bbk headers. Lol. They said it would fit my stock heads. They were wrong.

Hi,

For some reason, I think they are an M10 x 1.5. That is where I can't remember for sure. They could be M10 x 1.25.

I found a replacement, Fel-Pro ES75105. Look that up and let me know if it helps.

Take care,

You think this will work? It says it's for 2006 4.6. mine is a 2007 4.6. but mine is also a GT. Not sure if that matters. The S197 I believe was made from 2005-2010..

Hi,

That is a very good question. I also found Dorman part 47713JC. It indicates up to 2006, but when I check fitment, it shows it works on a 2007 as well. Take a look at the pic below and compare it to what you have.

Let me know.

What I have doesn't have that kind of head. Just threaded on both ends. I believe the pic you sent me the other day should be correct. I went to AutoZone earlier and I purchased them. If they are not correct, I will get a refund and then try these out. I'm sure these and everything else are aftermarket since my car is old. I really do appreciate everything you have been helping me with.

Hi,

No problem whatsoever. I just hope I'm helping and not driving you crazy. LOL The information I'm finding is somewhat confusing and not specific.

Let me know if those work for you.

You're not driving me crazy. My car has been down since 2019. That's usually how it goes with vehicles. Confusing, not specific, convoluted. Trust me, I take everyone's advice, including my own knowledge, manuals, videos and whatever I can use to help. Take care and I will let you know if the part I get is the correct one.

Does this matter? It's not flush. The bottom half has 7 threads on the new stud. My old has 10 threads.

Hi,

I would like to see it in further. I was always taught if the thread depth is at least 50% of the diameter, it is fine. It's hard for me to tell that in the pic, but do you feel it is at least that deep?

I recounted the threads on the smaller side. There are 8 threads. There are ten threaded grooves in the manifold. Would you consider that 50%?

Looks good. I have only two threaded grooves showing on the back of the manifold. I accidentally put on a nut and I have to figure out how to take it off lol. So I can reinstall the stud.

You should be able to grab the raised section with channel locks to hold it in place. Then you will be able to turn the nut.

Let me know.

Not trying to damage the threads. I don't have a bench vice. I would be holding it in my hands. It's like an oval kind of nut. I was going to use my cordless impact but needed something to hold it in place without moving or marring the threads.

Hi,

If you use a good set of vice grips, you should be fine. I circled where I would put them. Also, the nut design indicates it is a locking nut. It's designed to function as if you used a lock washer. It will come off but will be tighter to turn.

Let me know.

It worked. I used vise grips and a crescent wrench. I was able to spin it off without messing with the threads. A friend helped me with it. I appreciate it. Tomorrow I finish cleaning one side of the engine block so I can reinstall the passenger side cylinder head. Should be fun.
