About 2 years ago my battery was dead when i got off work. Put in a new battery and it died again in less than a month. I had just gotten a new car so i let it sit until winter. Put in another new battery and it started fine. Its would not start the next day. After turning the key several times it did start so i figured the starter was going out. Well i just replaced the starter and it started twice just fine. Now it wont start again. Only a few hours later. Turn they key, no crank no clicks. Checked relays and fuses no problems there. My key fob has a new battery but is not reconized by the truck so it wont lock or unlock the doors. With the doors and hood closed the dash lights do not turn off. Cabin lights go off though. I have no idea what to do next. Did I get a bad starter?

Most likely it is a defective starter which is common, can I ask which brand starter you installed? Here is a video and a guide to help you tell for sure what the problem is. please go over them both.

Please upload a short video in your response of the problem, so I can see what's going on. Ken

I tested the starter trigger connection and it has no power. Had someone try to start it while i had a multimeter on it and nothing. The other connection is getting constant power with minimal drop in voltage when the key is turned. My DIC, i think its called, is saying everything needs service. Airbags, 4x4, tire pressure. The starter i purchased is a rebuilt one, they didnt have any new starters, the box it came in says ultima. Having no crank at all, the first link didnt have anything useful as far as i can tell. The second link at least showed me what to test.

Yep, this doesn't even try, did it do this with the old starter as well? I would try starting it in neutral to see if that works and if so the neutral safety switch is out. I would double check for 12 volts at the trigger wire while the key is in the crank position as well. Here is the location of the tarter relay which I would swap out as well. Check out the images (below). Let us know what you find. Thanks for the video it helps.

It did the same thing with the old starter but after turning the key a few times it would start. I did try starting in neutral and nothing happened. The dash lights staying on only started when the new starter was installed. I tested the trigger wire while someone tried to start it and it still showed no power. Today i pulled some fuses and disconnected the ignitoin switch. All dash lights went off except the check engine light.that finally went off when i pulled the run/crank relay. Checked the mega fuse and pulled out the fuse box looking for corrosion. Didnt find any. When i installed this starter the nut on the stud where the trigger wire is would not get tight but it did still start twice. I have used another nut, now 2 on one stud and the wire does not move. I decided to check the grounds, everything looks good except there is one I cant see or touch behind the engine. Tried to jump start it using my other vehicle but that didnt help. Ecm maybe? I dont know if there is a way to test that.

When the key is in the "crank" position do you have power at the small (trigger) wire at the starter? Please go over the guide and video above. If so the starter is defective. Let me know
