Hello,

The hatchback on our SUV listed above opens when activated makes it to the top but makes a 'popping" sound like something is in a bind, then auto closes.
So what happens is it opens, makes it to the top (not halfway) then closes right back down.
I think the kid actually closed it manually by pulling down on it the other day, not sure if this could have caused the issue.
Any advice on troubleshooting this issue?
Thanks in advance!

Most likely this is the motor or gearing (shown in picture) that is binding. This motor works on resistance and basically when it sees resistance it reverses course because it thinks somebody is then trying to close it.

The popping noise that you are hearing is the actual binding.

The only way to find this is remove the interior panels and sit in the back and operate the lift-gate and see what is actually going on.

Let me know what you need further then this and I will be happy to assist.

Thanks
