hard to move shifter

It will shift but the shifter feels tight, tough to move and the selector cable just broke. The selector cable is a discontinued part and will be replacing it with an expensive used cable and do not want to stress or break this one as well.

Once the cable is off try moving the transmission gear selector by hand to see if something is binding up there.

Then something inside the transmission is causing the problem. Here is a diagram to help us see what it is you will need to pull the pan.
