It starts fine in the morning and after a few minutes of sitting, but after a few hours (3-4), it cranks but doesn't want to engage. When it finally does, it splutters as if you flooded a carburetor on an older car, and there's a strong fuel smell. It's becoming a frequent problem. Code scanner lists P0420, but the catalytic converter is only a couple years old, as is the bank 1 O2 sensor. Also, I think this is just a symptom and not the cause? I have read about pressure regulator, pump, leaky injectors, etc., but none of the symptoms seem to quite fit what people describe.

Hi,

The idea that you smell fuel and have a converter code somewhat indicates one or more of the injectors is leaking fuel and then raw fuel is getting to the converter. That will damage it causing a P0420.

What I suggest is to inspect the fuel pressure. Once pressure is reached, turn off the key and see if the pressure drops off quickly.

Here is a link that explains how to check fuel pressure:

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. Additionally, let me know if there are additional codes other than the P0420.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks Joe, will do. I'll have to see about getting a gauge this weekend, and I'll get back to you.
