Handbrake cable snapped but still rolls in gear

Hi, my handbrake cable snapped yesterday but when I park my car in any gear the car still rolls when the engine is off. I thought this was to stop it rolling?

Hi,
This is not a fool proof way of stopping the vehicle from rolling.
If the road is sloped too steep and the engine compression is not too good, or if the clutch is slipping, it would roll.
