The power supply has to be shorted to ground. Have you tried tracing wires to see if there is anything damaged or broken? Have you checked plugs to make sure nothing has melted down and shorted?

I took the control unit out, checked the plug and it looks good. Not sure how to proceed from there.

Can I cut the red and black wires going into the control unit and run new wires with a fuse back to the battery?

Not recommended. Have you tried tracing the power supply wire to see if it is damaged?
