I just started commuting again and there are many hills in my city. A couple months ago I replaced my front wheel bearings and shocks. Since that time I’ve still had a faint rotational metallic rubbing noise. I assumed it was the new bearing and was a little concerned it might need replaced again. But, just this week that faint rubbing is now accompanied by a deeply concerning metallic sounding grind while braking. I’ve checked my pads and they’re still at around 50%, and no grooves in the discs. But the very loud grinding also almost feels like it wants to lock up when applying more braking pressure. I’ve jacked it up and there isn’t any wobble or play in the bearing. It mostly sounds like it’s coming from the front driver side. While jacked up I spun the wheel forward with a little resistance and minute noise. But, rotating it in reverse it quickly gets harder to rotate and the grind noise amplifies.

It sounds like the left front bearing hub is defective which will create the problem you seem to be having. Here is a video on how to change the hub bearing correctly:

Here are the instructions with torque specs. Check out the images (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem so we can see what's going on.
