Hello 2CarPros,

I went to start my car this morning and I only get a grinding noise, no cranking and no starting. Seems to be starter related. It's a brand-new starter that was installed about 6 months ago. Never had any issues with it starting right up until this morning. Going to try and get it into my mechanic this morning but figured I'd see if there's anything I should try myself first, since I know sometimes just smacking a starter can get it working again (although that's only when the solenoid is stuck).

Hello,

It sounds like the starter motor Bendix gear is not engaging on the ring gear of the flywheel.

Please see below how a starter works.

And how to replace a starter.

Basically, the starter gear is not messing with the flex plate and so it just grinds or clicks. Unfortunately, the only real way to know is to remove it and inspect the teeth on both gears.

Please see picture below of Bendix.

Please let us know how you get along.

Cheers, Boris

Hello Boris,

My apologies for the slow reply. This issue ended up being exactly what you said, "It sounds like the starter motor Bendix gear is not engaging on the ring gear of the flywheel.". The starter had not been properly locked down (there was no bolt holding it down) so it got loose and was pointing in the wrong direction. This was a pretty easy fix but required a tow to my mechanic. Thanks again for your help.

Adam
