So yesterday I got a rebuilt dorman shift motor put it on. And now I hear a grinding sound almost a whining coming from the tcase. What could it be. It sounds like its only half engaging.

If you can and feel safe to. Get all four wheels off the ground and remove the t-case shifter motor. With the engine off manually shift the t case and if it shifts & all four tires move then the t case seems to be in working condition and would condemn the shifter motor. This is assuming the electrical to and from the shifter motor is in good condition. (No corrosion or melted plastic terminals for example).
If your unable to shift the t case then the issue is the t case and would recommend replacement instead of rebuilding.
